How does Onebip reduce the risk of customers not having enough mobile credit during a transaction?

Carrier Billing (Direct Operator Billing and PSMS billing) mechanisms are the most convenient billing methods ever come in e-commerce from a consumer perspective. Consumers can pay safely and quickly just in seconds without entering any confidential information or filling out tiring forms. It promises very high conversion rates thanks to its simplicity such as one-click payments dramatically increasing the conversion rate and revenue.

Carrier billing is right now the only working mobile payment method on a global scale with its extensive use by reaching almost up to 7 billion mobile phone accounts potentially and is very much rooted in the telecommunications industry and controlled by the mobile network operators who charge directly on the customer’s phone bill or on the pre-paid balance.

However, not every consumer has enough prepaid balance at the moment of a transaction session or they have forgotten to top-up their balance before a transaction session to make the payment. Instead of losing the transaction session, we have developed two solutions to create other options to get the payment done in the same transaction session. This is not only a benefit for the consumer who wants and needs the product or the service at that moment but also for merchants who can sell their products or services without losing the customer already started the transaction session.

These two solutions are:

– The combination of different billing mechanisms

– The smart billing features


The combination of different billing mechanisms identifies the characteristics of a transaction and automatically determines the most convenient billing method (DOB, PSMS or ISP billing) and the type of consumer experience for each transaction session. This smart combined billing technology decides which billing method to use depending on whether the consumer is billable and then serves the consumer the best payment experience available for example, one click flow. It achieves more successful payments, a seamless payment experience and higher conversion rates for merchants.

We often think about “smart billing” as a concept of maximizing the billing success rate by using features like “Split billing” or “Pending user billing” which our platform uses to maximize the success rate of a transaction. The logic behind split billing is to “split” the total amount into different quantities that the user is most likely to have in his or her mobile phone credit balance or “split” the amount into several quantities until you find the mobile phone credit is acceptable enough to complete the transaction. The logic behind pending users billing is that if the activation attempt of the user is not successful because of any kind of error, but mostly because of insufficient balance, the request is reserved, put into the pending billing status, retried and the payment or the subscription service is activated once the user has enough mobile phone credit.

These solutions offer big advantages for merchants and consumers and require very deep market knowledge and very advanced technology with a powerful billing platform behind it. These features are automatically integrated in Onebip’s API and do not require an additional integration effort.
